Argentina:

The Republic of Argentina is located in the southern, western and maritime hemisphere. Its territory comprises a South American continental part, islands and a sector of Antarctica.

The Argentine Antarctica lies between 25º and 74º W and south of 60ºS down to the South Pole.

The main features of the Argentine territory are the following:

  • South American continental space: 2,791,810 km2. Most of the economic activity is developed in this area.
  • Antarctic continental space: The population living in this territory belongs to scientific bases and family groups. Its area is 969,464 km2.

Australia:

Australia is the largest island continent in the world, with a total area of over 7,600,000 sq km, lying south of the Equator between the Indian and South Pacific Oceans. The population is approximately 19.5 million, with a growth rate of about 1%. The majority of the population (85%) resides in urban areas along the east and southeast coastline and fertile plains.

Much of the interior of the country is flat, barren and sparsely populated. The highest point, Mt Kosciuszko reaching 2,229m, is within an extensive mountain range running north south along the eastern seaboard. Australia also lays claim to the third largest marine jurisdiction in the world and has a coastline extending more than 36,700km.

Austria:

Austria is situated in southern central Europe, covering part of the eastern Alps and the Danube region and, although land-locked, it borders on the Mediterranean area. The country has a wide variety of landscape, vegetation and climate, and situated as it is at the heart of the continent, it has always been a junction for communication links between the trade and cultural centres of Europe.

Austria is a federal state with a total area of 83,858 sq.km, consists of nine provinces and has a population of 8.1 million.

Austria has common borders with eight other countries. The borders have an overall length of about 2,708 km.

Brunei:

Brunei Darussalam - in Borneo Island with Malaysia and Indonesia (states).

Brunei Darussalam is situated on the north-west of the island of Borneo, between east longitudes 114 degrees 04' and 114 degrees 23' and north latitudes of 4 degrees 00' and 5 degrees 05'. It has a total area of 5,765 sq.km. with a coastline of about 161 km along the South China Sea. It is bounded on the North by the South China Sea and on all the other sides by Malaysian State of Sarawak.

Cambodia:

Cambodia is located in the South-East Asia, with a total area of 181,035 sq km lying north of the Equator and next to Vietnam, Thailand, Laos and Gulf of Siam. The population is approximately 12 million, with the annual growth rate of about 2.5%.

Statistics on land are as yet not too accurate in Cambodia. Information available indicates that the cultivated area under subsistence (or peasant) farming covers 2.71 million ha, and 1 million ha are taken up by towns, infrastructure and waterways. The protected areas cover 3.27 million ha and forestry and fishing concessions are taking up 4.21 million ha and 1million ha, respectively. Agricultural concessions cover about 0.83 million ha and forest lands, not under any concession or protection, cover about 3.27 million ha.

China:

The People's Republic of China, located in East Asia, on the western shore of the Pacific Ocean, is the third largest country in the world in terms of area and the largest in terms of population. Its total area is 9.6 million sq km and its population is 1.2 billion. The territory of China measures some 5,500 km from north to south and about 5,200 km from west to east. China has land borders 22,800 km long, with 15 contiguous countries. The Chinese mainland is flanked to the east and south by the Bohai, Yellow, East China and South China seas, with a total maritime area of 4.73 million sq km. A total of 5,400 islands dot China's vast territorial waters, including the Taiwan Island, the Hainan Island and others. ...

Cyprus:

Cyprus is situated in the north-eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea, with an area of 9251 km² and a population of approximately 793,000. Topographically Cyprus consists of two mountain masses (on the north and south) and a central lowland. The Kyrenia Range lies close to the north coast and consists mainly of limestone. To the south is the Mesaoria Plain. The southern half of the island is occupied by the rugged Troodos Mountains, composed mainly of volcanic rocks and reaching a maximum elevation of 1953 m. The agricultural areas have the biggest share with 47.89%, followed by the forest and semi-natural areas, which represent the 44.12% of the total land area of the island. The share of the other categories is much smaller, with the artificial coverage covering 7.63%, followed by wetlands with 0.21% and water with 0.15% of the total area of Cyprus.

Czech Republic:

The Czech Republic is a small landlocked country, lying in the central part of Europe. Its area of 78,866 square kilometres, population of 10,289,621 people, and population density of 130 inhabitants per square kilometre rank the country on the 21st, 12th and 13th places among European countries, respectively. The country's borders make up neighbourhood with Poland (762 km), Germany (810 km), Austria (466 km) and Slovakia (252 km). 67% of the country's whole territory can be found at an altitude of up to 500m, 32% between 500 and 1,000m, and only 1% above 1,000m. The average altitude of the Czech Republic is 430m.

The land fund according to land use is distributed as follows:

  • 54% of total area is an agriculture land (arable land 39%, gardens 2%, meadows and pastures 13%),
  • 46% of total area is non-agriculture land (forests 33%, waters 2%, buildings and yards 2%, other land 9%)
Denmark:

Denmark is a part of Scandinavia and a member of the European Union. The total area is 43,000 sq. kilometres (not including the Faeroe Islands and Greenland). The population is around 5.3 million of which 85% live in the cities and towns. About one third of the population lives in the capital area of Greater Copenhagen.

Denmark is a low-lying country, its highest point rising 175 metres above the sea. Approximately 10% of the country is used for urban areas and transport installations, 67% is agricultural land, 12% is forests, and the rest is semi-natural areas such as heaths, lakes and streams. Denmark consists of Jutland, a peninsula, two major islands Zealand and Funen, and an archipelago of around 400 islands of which around 80 are inhabited. The total coastline stretches for some 7,300 kilometres.

Fiji:

The Republic of Fiji, which includes the island of Rotuma, lies wholly within the southern tropics, between the Equator and the Tropic of Capricorn, and between longitudes 175 and 178 degrees west and latitudes 15 and 22 degrees south. The area included within Fiji's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) is 1,163,272 square kilometres but most of this is ocean with only 18,333 square kilometres of land. Only 16% of this landmass is suitable for agriculture and is found mainly along the coastal plains, river deltas, and valleys.

Finland:

Finland has 5.2 million inhabitants. The total area of the country is 338,000 km2. On average there are about 17 inhabitants/km2. The population is located mainly in the Southern and Western parts of the country. 67% live in towns or urban areas, 33% in rural areas.

Land use: 68% is forest, 10% water, 6% cultivated land and 2% urban areas. Finland is a land of lakes; there are about 188,000 lakes and about 179,000 islands.

Germany:

The Federal Republic of Germany is situated in the heart of Europe with nine neighbor countries. Germany is a link between East and West and between Scandinavia and the Mediterranean. It covers an area of about 357,000 km2, 876 km from north to south and 640 km from west to east. The total length of the countries borders is 3,758 km. The terrain consists of a variety of landscapes, from coastal lowlands in the north, the central upland range to the Alpine foothills in the south and the Bavarian Alps with the highest point, Zugspitze (2,962 m).

Hong Kong:

Hong Kong, geologically a submerged highland area, is a deepwater port in Southeast China, with an area about 1100 km2. Most of the 6.8 million of population dwell in Hong Kong Island, Kowloon Peninsula and flat land in the New Territories and outskirt islands. Metropolitan development covers near half of the area and the rest half hilly area is designated as country parks.

Hungary:

Hungary is located in Central Europe, one of the candidate countries joining the European Union in 2004. The total area is 93,000 sq.km. The population is about 10.1 million, 60 % live in cities. About one fifth of the population live in the capital of Budapest, which is the centre of the economy and cultural life.

The majority of the country is plain area; there are mountains in northern and western area. The highest peak in Hungary in the northern mountains is 1015m above sea level. 7% of the country is urban area, 65% is used for agricultural purpose, 15% is forest, the rest are rivers, lakes, and national reserve.

India:

India is located in Southern Asia, bordering the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, between Burma and Pakistan with an area of over 3,287,270 sq km including territorial sea. It has land cover over 2,973,190 sq km. The land mass boundary is about 15,200 km and coastal line is about 75,166 km Mainland, Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar.

India has plain in south, flat to rolling plain along the Ganges, desert in west and high mountains in north. Kanchanjunga is the highest peak of height 8598 m in the north.

Indonesia:

Indonesia is the largest archipelagic country in the world, consists of 17,508 small and big islands, with a total area of 1,919,440 sq km, consists of water area = 93,000 sq km (not included exclusive economic zone: 200 nautical miles, and land area = 1,826,440 sq km with its coast line = 54,716 km. Straddles equator, strategic location astride or along major sea lanes from Indian Ocean to Pacific Ocean. Population = 231,328,092 (July 2002 est.). Arable land = 9.9%, permanent crops = 7.2%, others = 82.9%. Land use: cultivable regions = 123,432,164 ha (consists of forests = 57.74% and non-forest = 42.26%); sheltered regions = 67,491,646 ha (consists of forest = 81.56% and non-forest = 18.44%).

Israel:

Israel is located in the Middle East, bordering the Mediterranean Sea, between Egypt and Lebanon next to Syria and Jordan. The total area of over 20,770 sq km and a coastline of about 190 km along the Mediterranean. The area of lakes (sea of Galilee and Dead sea) 440 sq km (2%). Israel lies between 340°30' - 350°45' W and 29°30' - 33°20' N. The territory of Israel measures some 420 km from north to south and about 120 km from west to east.

The population of Israel is about 7 million of which 85% live in the cities and towns. About 80% of the population Jewish and 20% non-Jewish (mostly Arab). Iran:

Iran is the large country in Middle East, with a total area of 1,648,195 sq km, lying south of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, and nourth of Qatar, U.A.E, Bahrein, Saudi-Arabia, Kuwait and west of Pakistan and Afghanistan and east of Iraq and Turkey. The Land Boundary is almost 5,261 km along above countries. The Coast Line is about 2440 km along Caspian Sea, Oman Sea and Persian Golf. According to the National Geographic Organization statistics the Total length of Iranian borderlines is 8731 km. Japan:

Japan is an island nation stretching archwise in northeastern Asia between the North Pacific and the Sea of Japan. The land consists of 4 main islands and over 6,800 islands with a total area of approximately 380,000 sq km, which is roughly the size of California. Japan is mountainous country lying on the circum-Pacific volcanic zone. Mountain ranges with altitude of 2,000-3,000m, which are collectively called the Japan Alps, cross the center of the main island. The highest point, Mt. Fuji is one of the active volcanoes reaching 3,776m. There are 150 important volcanoes and crustal movements cause frequent earthquakes. The Population is approximately 127 million with an annual growth rate of 0.11% ('01-'02). The majority resides in urban areas along the Pacific side. With few flat areas (approx. 24% of total land), its density of population in inhabitable area is one of the highest of the world.

Jordan:

Jordan's total area is around 89,000km2 and with a population of about 5 millions inhabitants. The Capital city of Jordan is Amman with population of about 1.5 million inhabitants. 80% (est.) of the total area is desert. 16% (est.) settled areas, 4% is arable land. All forest, including re-planted areas, cover less than one present of the country.

73% of the population are urban; less than 6% of the rural population is nomadic or semi nomadic. 70% of the urban population lives within 30 km of the capital city, Amman.

Kiribati:

Kiribati is amongst the smallest island nations of the world. The nation comprised 33 low lying coral islands and atolls scattered along and astride the equator between the 170degrees East meridian and 150degrees west meridian in the central Pacific ocean. This is a stretch of 4,400km between the most eastern and western located islands.

Kiribati claimed to be the first country to sight the new millennium and thus renamed its most un-inhabited eastern located island Millennium Island after the occasion. Only 20 of the 33 islands are inhabited. Although the total land area of all the islands put together is relatively small at only 750 sq km the vast ocean area that surrounded the three main groups of islands (Gilbert, Phoenix and Line islands) forming the country's exclusive economic zone covered roughly 3.5 million sq km of the Pacific Ocean.

The population according to the recent census accounted for almost 85,000 persons in Kiribati with a growth rate of 1.8% per annum. The capital South Tarawa with its land area of 16 sq km is home for 43% (almost 37,000 persons) of the total population.

Korea (Rep. of):

The Korean Peninsula, located in Northeast Asia, is bordered on the north by China and Vladivostock, Russia. To the southeast, it juts toward the lower islands of Japan. The Korean Peninsula is 222,154 km2, almost the same size as the U.K. or Romania. The administrative area of the Republic of Korea is 99,585 km2, slightly larger than Hungary or Portugal and a little smaller than Ireland.

The Republic of Korea is composed of nine provinces and 6 metropolitan cities. Its capital city is Seoul. The landscape of the country is spectacular in its variations, about 70 percent of it being mountainous. More than 3,000 islands dot the coastline.

Latvia:

Latvia is to be found in the North-eastern Europe, on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea. It is the central country of three Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania). The territory of the Republic of Latvia is 64 589 square kilometers. The length of state border is 1,862 km, but the length of the coastline - 494 km. Latvia borders Estonia, Russia, Belarus and Lithuania. The capital of the state is Riga, almost one third of the population of the state lives there (at the beginning of 2005 - 731,762).

Lithuania:

Lithuania is located at the western end of the East European Plain, on the shores of the Baltic Sea. It borders Latvia, Belarus, Poland and the Russian Federation (Kaliningrad district) and is the biggest of the three Baltic States. The total area is 65,300 sq. kilometers making the total of 1273 km land boundaries and 99 km of coastline bordering the Baltic Sea. The geographical centre of Europe (54°51' north and 25°19' east) lies in Lithuania, 20 kilometres north of Vilnius, the capital city of Lithuania. Macao:

The Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR), being part of the China Territory, is located at the Pearl River Delta of the southeastern coast of Mainland China. The territory, 26.8 sq km in area, consists of the Macao Peninsula, Taipa Island and Coloane Island - the Macao Peninsula is connected to the Taipa Island by two bridges and the two islands are connected by reclaimed lands. The highest peak, of 170.6 m in height, is located on the Coloane Island. Macao has undergone many substantial changes in shape and size over its history. In the last century alone Macao has more than doubled its land area.

The population is approximately 441.6 thousands, with about 95 percent of the population Chinese and 5 percent Portuguese, Europeans and from other countries. More than 85 percent of the population resides in the Macao peninsula, others in Taipa and Coloane Island, as well as the maritime area.

Malaysia:

Malaysia covers an area of about 329,758 sq. km, consisting of 11 states in Peninsular Malaysia, 2 states in the island of Borneo (Sabah and Sarawak) and 3 Federal Territories. Peninsular Malaysia, covering 131,598 sq. km. has its frontier with Thailand and Singapore while the states in Borneo covering 198,160 sq. km. borders the territory of Indonesia's Kalimantan to the South and Brunei to the North. Malaysia lies close to the equator between latitudes 1°and 7° North and Longitudes 100° and 119° East. The population is approximately 24.92 million, with a growth rate of about 1.7%. Malaysia is a muti-racial country and the majority of the population resides along the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

Namibia:

Namibia is located on the southwestern corner of Africa and covers an area of 834,295 square kilometers, which makes it the 31st largest country in the world. It shares long borders with Angola in the north, Botswana in the east and through the Caprivi Zipfel touches Zambia and Zimbabwe. Netherlands:

The Netherlands is a country located in Western Europe, bordering the North Sea, between Belgium and Germany. It is located at the delta of three major European rivers (Rhine, Maas, Schelde). The area of land is 33,883 km2 and of water 7,643 km2. The geographical coordinates are 52 30 N, and 5 45 E. The terrain consists of mostly coastal lowland and reclaimed land (polders), with some hills in the southeast. The lowest point is -7 m (Zuidplaspolder) and the highest point +322 m (Vaalserberg). It is estimated that 8% is urban land, 58% is agricultural land, 7% is forest, 3% is natural reserve, and the rest is various. There are 6.6 million buildings.

New Zealand :

New Zealand is situated in the Southwest Pacific (Te Moana Nui a Kiwa) ocean, some 2000 km east of Australia in temperate latitudes, and lies close to the 180° meridian, extending from the 162nd degree of east longitude and 173rd degree of west longitude, and between the 33rd and 53rd parallels of south latitude.

New Zealand's people are principally derived from Maori (Polynesian) and European descent. English and Maori are the two official languages. English is most widely spoken, though the Maori language, is making a comeback due to the revival of Maori culture. Norway :

Norway covers the western and northern sections of the Scandinavian peninsula, and includes the northern territories of Jan Mayen Island and the Svalbard archipelago. In the east, Norway borders with Sweden, Finland and Russia. At the very north is the Barents Sea and in the west the Norwegian Sea. The North Sea and Skagerrak lies off the southern coast. Norway is 1,752 km long from Lindesnes to Nordkapp. The coastline is 21,112 km, and the country is covering 323,802 sq km. The population is around 4.5 million (2002). Norway is richly endowed with natural resources, including oil, gas, fish, timber and waterfalls used for hydropower. But only a small percentage of Norway's land area is suitable for productive agriculture or forestry. All over the country you could find wilderness including large forest areas, different pristine landscape and mountainous tracts. The highest mountain, Galdhøpiggen, is 2469 meter over sea level.

Philippines:

Philippines is one of the South East Asian countries, composed of around 7,100 islands with a land area of approximately 30 Million hectares and lying north of the Equator with the South China Sea on the west and the Pacific Ocean on the east. Specifically, it is scattered within 4 degrees to 22 degrees Latitudes and 116 degrees to 127 degrees Longitudes.

There are three (3) major group of islands namely : Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. South Africa :

Based on statistics, emanating from Census 2001, dated October 2001, the 2nd Census in a democratic South Africa, the estimated population of South Africa is 44,8 million people. The 1st Census dated October 1996, indicated an estimated population of 40,6 million people. 55,4% live in urban areas and 44,6% in rural areas. South Africa is located at the southern tip of the continent of Africa . The geographic co-ordinates are 22 00-34 00 South and 16 00-32 00 East. It has an area of 1,219,912 sq.km, which includes Marion and Prince Edward Islands. This is slightly less than twice the size of Texas. Sri Lanka:

Sri Lanka is a topical island, lies southeast of the Southern tip of India, and well known to travellers of many nationalities from ancient times. Total area is 65600 km2 . Major climatic zones are Wet, Dry and Intermediate. Population has increased from 2.76 million in 1881 to the present 20 million, recording a sharp increase particularly after Independence. Population concentrates heavily in the southwest and central regions of the island and in the Jaffna Peninsula. The Dry Zone, in spite of state-aided settlement schemes in recent decades, remains sparsely populated. Sri Lanka's highest point is over 2,524 meters at Piduruthalagala Peak.

Sweden:

Sweden has about 450,000 km2 and a population close to 9 million. About 80% live in urban areas.

Switzerland:

Switzerland is situated in the centre of Western Europe, bordering with Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Italy and France. Its territory covers an area of 41,290 sq km and is dominated by mountain ranges (Alps in the South, Jura in the Northwest) with a central plateau of plains, rolling hills and large lakes. The highest point is Dufourspitze with 4,634m, while the lowest point is Lago Maggiore at 193m above sea level.

The total population is 7,261,000 (end of 2001). The five largest urban areas are Zurich (943,400), Geneva (457,500), Basle (401,600), Berne (319,100), and Lausanne (288,100). There are four languages in Switzerland that are used and recognized as official administrative languages. About 65% of the population speak German, 19% French, 8% Italian, and 1% Romansch; a remaining 7% speak other languages.

Tanzania:

Tanzania is located on the east coast of Africa between latitude 1°S and 12°S, and 29°E and 41°E. It is bordered by Kenya and Uganda to the North, Rwanda, Burundi and Democratic Republic of Congo to the West, Zambia to the Southwest, Malawi and Mozambique to the South, and the Indian Ocean to the East. Tanzania is predominantly agricultural with emerging mining activities.
